Planning a small wedding doesn’t mean you have to think small — especially in New England, where charming coastal towns, mountain views, and historic inns offer the perfect backdrop for an intimate celebration. Whether you’re dreaming of a micro wedding with 30 guests or an adventurous elopement for just the two of you, this planning guide will help you stay on track and make it memorable (and stress-free!).

As a wedding planner who specializes in elopements and micro weddings, I’ve created a timeline that keeps things simple — and tailored just for you.

6–9 Months Before (or As Soon As You Know!)

Wedding Planner

Even small weddings deserve expert planning. Hiring a planner early helps you bring your vision to life and ensures your vendors are the right fit for your size and style.

  • Vendor referrals that match your vibe

  • Timeline creation and coordination

  • Travel or location logistics for unique elopements

Choose Your Date + Location

Micro weddings and elopements offer flexibility — you don’t have to stick to a Saturday!

  • Consider weekdays or off-season for more options

  • Look into permits for beaches, parks, and scenic spots

  • Cozy inns, Airbnb homes, coastal cliffs, and forests = dreamy New England settings

Photographer

Photography is one of the most important investments, even for a 10-person wedding. These are the moments you’ll cherish forever.

  • Book early if you’re eyeing someone in high demand

  • Look for photographers who offer elopement or hourly packages

  • Ask if they’ll help scout locations or plan timelines

Officiant

You’ll need someone to marry you — whether it’s a professional or a loved one getting ordained.

  • Book your officiant as soon as you set your date

  • Work together on a custom, personal ceremony

3–6 Months Before

Hair + Makeup Artist

Just because it’s a smaller wedding doesn’t mean you won’t want to feel your absolute best.

  • Book an HMUA who specializes in natural, camera-ready looks

  • Don’t skip the trial — it’s your time to relax and feel confident!

Florals

A gorgeous bouquet, boutonniere, and maybe a ceremony installation — florals are still a mood-setter for small weddings.

  • Ask about a “petite package” for elopements

  • Seasonal blooms shine in New England

  • Add a floral crown, dog collar, or bouquet repurpose for reception

Attire

From non-traditional gowns to colorful suits, smaller weddings give you more freedom to wear what feels right.

  • Look for ready-to-wear designers or small bridal boutiques

  • Give yourself time for alterations

1–3 Months Before

Stationery or Digital Invites

You may not need 100 invitations — but even for 10–30 guests, it’s nice to set the tone.

  • Custom-designed invites, vow books, and signage elevate the day

  • For elopements, consider a beautiful announcement to send after the wedding

Content Creator (Optional but Fun!)

Want real-time social media content without relying on guests? Hire a content creator to capture the behind-the-scenes.

  • Perfect for elopements or destination micro weddings

  • Includes short-form videos and phone footage for Reels/TikToks

Cake or Sweet Treats

Even if you’re just two people deep — you still deserve cake.

  • Look for bakers who offer mini cakes or cupcakes

  • Consider pies, donuts, or even a dessert picnic

Lodging + Dinner Reservations

If you’re not hosting a full reception, you may want a special dinner afterward.

  • Book a private dining room, Airbnb chef, or favorite restaurant

  • For destination-style elopements, plan a weekend itinerary

1–2 Weeks Before

Marriage License

Don’t forget the legal part!

  • Every New England state is different (In Maine, it’s valid for 90 days)

  • Apply in-person with ID and info

  • No waiting period in most states, but don’t leave it for the last second!

Timeline + Details

Even small weddings run more smoothly with a timeline. I help my couples plan the flow of the day, from first looks to sunset photos.

  • Share with all vendors

  • Include special touches like private vows, toasts, or a champagne pop!

Extra Tips for New England Elopements + Micro Weddings

  1. Plan for the weather – Always have a rain plan. New England is gorgeous… and unpredictable!

  2. Think seasonally – Fall foliage, spring lilacs, summer coastlines — plan your florals, wardrobe, and setting around the best each season offers.

  3. Travel smart – If you’re eloping in a new spot, book nearby accommodations and scout locations ahead of time.

  4. Celebrate how YOU want – A small guest list gives you freedom. Want a lobster bake after your ceremony? A mountaintop picnic? A champagne toast in a sailboat? Let’s do it.
